Welcome Black Celebration 2023: Black Joy

The Office of Multicultural Student Engagement (OMSE) celebrated our sixth annual Wayne State University (WSU) Welcome Black event! Welcome Black 2023 was held on Saturday, August 26th at 6:00 PM in the Student Center Ballroom. We had over 325 attendees! This included staffc faculty, alumni, and most importantly hundreds of students! Our goal was to help our Black students get connected to WSU campus resources, Black student organizations, Black faculty, and staff at the beginning of the school year. We were certainly able to achieve this goal just looking at the joy that was present in the space! 

 Welcome Black Social Media Campaign Team

This year something new that made the event so successful and helped reach our students where they were was our Welcome Black Social Media Campaign Team. This student-led team was able to successfully spearhead the promotion and marketing of the event on social media and helped the newly created Instagram and Tik Tok pages reach over 10,000 accounts! Welcome Black Series

This year we have been able to modify the way we support Welcome Black by expanding our footprint to create Welcome Black Series Events! We continue to work with different campus partners to bring events that support the social connection and networking between staff and students. Please stay tuned as we continue to host Welcome Black Series Events throughout the  school year. All OMSE events are open to all WSU students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and identities.

Welcome Black Student Resource Guide

In efforts to support our students throughout their entire academic journey, we have created a virtual resource guide that helps students identify many of the departments, student organizations, and need to know information regarding navigating Wayne State. Each resource listed is designed to serve all populations, however, many of them cater specifically to the needs of Black students and/or center diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are clickable links embedded in the document as well as address, phone numbers, and even a campus map.
