Welcome Black
Welcome Black Celebration 2024: Black Power and Protest
The Office of Multicultural Student Engagement (OMSE) will be celebrating our seventh annual Wayne State University (WSU) Welcome Black event! Welcome Black 2024 will be held on Saturday, August 24th at 4:00 PM in the Student Center Ballroom. We anticipate over 300 attendees! Please come out for an opportunity to connect with staff, faculty, alumni, and most importantly hundreds of students! Our goal iss to help our Black students get connected to WSU campus resources, Black student organizations, Black faculty, and staff at the beginning of the school year. We will certainly be able to achieve this goal with your attendance and hope to see you there!
Our existence is Power and Protest!
Welcome Black Social Media Campaign Team
As the second year of the Welcome Black Social Media Campaignn Team we would like to highlight our amazing students who spearheaded the promotion and marketing for our event! Our students work to ensure that the event is accessible reaches our students where they are (i.e. Social Media Engagement, Group Chats, etc.). This student-led team was started in 2023 and was able to successfully spearhead the creation of Welcome Black dedicated Instagram and Tik Tok pages that reached over 10,000 accounts! This year was even bigger and better and we hope to continue to engage students on our Welcome Black pages throughout the year!
We hope to continue to expand this work! If interested in working with our Welcome Black Social Media Campaign Team, please contact Blair Baker (gr6796@wayne.edu)
Welcome Black Series
This year we have been able to modify the way we support Welcome Black by expanding our footprint to create Welcome Black Series Events! We continue to work with different campus partners to bring events that support the social connection and networking between staff and students. Please stay tuned as we continue to host Welcome Black Series Events throughout the school year. All OMSE events are open to all WSU students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and identities.
Welcome Black Student Resource Guide
In efforts to support our students throughout their entire academic journey, we have created a virtual resource guide that helps students identify many of the departments, student organizations, and need to know information regarding navigating Wayne State. Each resource listed is designed to serve all populations, however, many of them cater specifically to the needs of Black students and/or center diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are clickable links embedded in the document as well as address, phone numbers, and even a campus map.
